General AI assistant with clinician and healthcare editions
Workup Desk vs ChatGPT
Comparison last verified November 2, 2026. Facts about ChatGPT come from the public sources listed at the end of this page.
The short answer
ChatGPT is a general assistant, and OpenAI now offers it to healthcare in two editions. ChatGPT for Clinicians launched in April 2026 and is free for verified US physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists, with clinical search, citations and a BAA you can sign in settings. ChatGPT for Healthcare is the organization edition, with shared templates, admin controls and a BAA, and since September 2026 a read-only Epic connection.
Workup Desk is narrower. You keep one patient per workspace, with that patient's referral, letters, results and your notes as the sources, and you draft the assessment, referral letter, handover summary or patient summary from them. You edit every draft in a rich-text editor and export it to PDF or Word.
If you want one assistant for clinical questions, evidence search and general writing, ChatGPT covers far more ground, and the clinician edition costs nothing in the US. A ChatGPT project can also hold one patient's files. Choose Workup Desk if you want the workspace itself organized around patients and clinical documents, shared inside your organization with roles.
Compare them side by side
| ChatGPT | Workup Desk | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Everyone. The clinician edition serves verified US clinicians, and the healthcare edition serves hospitals and health systems | Doctors who assess patients: primary care physicians, outpatient specialists and hospital doctors, alone or as a team |
| Unit of work | A chat, or a project that holds files, instructions and chats | One workspace per patient, holding that patient's documents and your notes |
| Sources it takes | Files, images and pasted text. A project holds 5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro, Business and Enterprise | The patient's documents as PDF, Word, Excel and PNG files, plus notes you type |
| Answers | Clinical search with citations to peer-reviewed sources in the clinician and healthcare editions, plus answers from the files you add | Answers from that patient's sources, naming the document each answer comes from. Workup Desk does not search the medical literature |
| Clinical documents | Drafts from your prompts. ChatGPT for Healthcare adds shared templates for discharge summaries, clinical letters and prior authorizations | Drafts you edit: a clinical assessment, a referral letter, a discharge or handover summary, a patient summary |
| EHR connection | A read-only Epic plugin for approved ChatGPT for Healthcare and HIPAA-enabled Enterprise workspaces. Not available to individual clinician accounts | None. You upload documents and export the finished draft to PDF or Word |
| Patient data | A BAA is available for ChatGPT for Clinicians and ChatGPT for Healthcare. Free, Plus, Pro, Business and Health in ChatGPT are not eligible | We keep data in your organization's account and check the permissions on each workspace on the server. Add identifiable patient data once the data processing agreement for your jurisdiction is in place |
| Price | Free for verified US clinicians in the clinician edition. Other plans run from Free to Enterprise | One paid plan, with billing through Stripe. Early access is by invitation from the waitlist |

Common questions
Does OpenAI have a ChatGPT for doctors?
Yes, two editions. ChatGPT for Clinicians launched on April 22, 2026 and is free for verified US physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists, who verify with an NPI and a license. ChatGPT for Healthcare is the organization edition for hospitals and health systems. OpenAI says it plans to expand clinician access to more countries over time.
Can I enter patient data into ChatGPT?
Only under a BAA and only in an eligible product. OpenAI's help center lists ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT for Clinicians among eligible services and says Free, Plus, Pro and Business are not. OpenAI tells clinicians not to share PHI until a BAA is in place. Outside the US, follow your own data protection rules.
Why use Workup Desk if a ChatGPT project can hold a patient's files?
You can use a project that way. Workup Desk differs in what surrounds the files. You get a workspace per patient inside an organization account, drafting settings for clinical document types, a rich-text editor with autosave and export to PDF or Word.
